Abstract: Dr. Sara Trechter (California State University Chico, USA) describes the historical context and current relationships which both detract from and contribute to opportunities for indigenous language revitalization. Focusing primarily on her work with one of the last fluent speakers of Nu'eta from the central United States, she challenges language teaching and revitalization methods that do not address the cultural needs of specific communities and focus on language as a product to be mastered.
